VSS Unity - Mechanical Systems
VSS Unity is a rocket-powered spaceship that is designed to fly space tourists to the edge of space. For the last two years, I have worked on her mechanical systems. Essentially, every component on the ship that moves and is not the rocket motor I have been involved with: Flight controls, the feather, environmental controls, and landing gear. Due to the size of Virgin Galactic, I have ultimately worn many hats working for the mechanical systems engineering team
My work has ranged from:
-
Hardware Modification Design.
-
Requirement Verification.
-
Material Review Board engineer for all mechanical systems.
-
Full-scale system analysis.
-
Mission support and commit criteria definition.
-
Test Planning and write-ups.
-
Modification work write-ups.
-
Stress analysis.
-
CAD Modeling and drawing.
-
Working with suppliers and procurement.
-
Redesign of components to meet new requirements without compromising program schedule.
